ABOUT
I am an award-winning Archive Producer, Producer and Consultant with more than 29 years’ experience working across documentary, factual television, drama, film and social / multimedia, commercials, advertising, theatre and much more.
I specialise in deep archive research, access, production, clearances, legal, licensing, edit management and delivery, working closely with directors, producers, filmmakers and production companies to find, source and deliver the right material for their stories.
I have worked across a wide range of subjects, including true crime, music, popular culture, history, biography and many other genres, with extensive experience taking archive-heavy productions from development, production, delivery and transmission.
My work has been recognised with eight personal FOCAL International award wins, including Archive Producer of the Year 2023 in recognition of "Ronnie's: Ronnie Scott and his Famous Jazz Club" and "American Murder: The Family Next Door". I have also contributed to BAFTA, Fondazione Mimmo Rotella Venice, RTS, Grierson, Emmy and various other award-winning and nominated productions.

With over 29 years’ experience as an Archive Producer, Producer, Archive Consultant and Filmmaker, I combine creative research with practical expertise in copyright, licensing, budgets and delivery.I offer a complete archive service or support with a particular stage of a project, across documentaries, drama, music, arts, entertainment, advertising, digital content, theatre and live events.Archive means much more than footage. I work with film, television, sound recordings, photographs, letters, diaries, documents, artwork, personal collections and memorabilia.
• RESEARCH, SOURCING & DISCOVERY •
My research extends from major international libraries and broadcasters to specialist collections, institutions, estates, private collectors and contributors’ own holdings.Longstanding industry relationships help me pursue material beyond online catalogues, including collections that have yet to be digitised. I follow leads, track down original sources and look beyond familiar images to find something distinctive.Whether the brief is precise or exploratory, I bring persistence, curiosity and a thorough knowledge of where to look.
• DEVELOPMENT & FEASIBILITY •
Bringing an Archive Producer into a project early can open up creative possibilities and prevent expensive surprises later.I assess scripts, treatments and research briefs, investigate the availability of relevant material and help establish realistic archive budgets and schedules. This includes allowing time for access, viewing, digitisation, permissions and the supply of suitable masters.I can also help identify material that informs interviews, filming and the wider development of a production.
• COPYRIGHT, OWNERSHIP & PROVENANCE •
I research who created material, where it came from, who controls it and what rights may need to be addressed before it can be used.This can involve tracing original producers, filmmakers, photographers, estates and successor companies, checking existing documentation and investigating underlying or third-party rights.My work draws on extensive practical experience of UK and international copyright issues. I work closely with production and legal teams on proposed uses, clearance questions and the documentation required for their assessment.
• LICENSING & NEGOTIATION •
I negotiate competitive archive licensing deals that reflect the needs of the production, its budget and its intended distribution.This includes agreeing fees, territories, media, licence periods and promotional uses, while keeping track of restrictions and approval requirements.Getting good value involves more than negotiating a rate. I look at supplier minimums, the combined use of material from each source, alternative options and the implications of changing an edit. The aim is to protect the creative ambition while keeping costs under control.
• TALENT, THIRD-PARTY & MUSIC CLEARANCES •
Licensing an archive clip or photograph does not always resolve every permission associated with it. I identify and coordinate additional clearances where required, liaising with performers, contributors, presenters, writers, photographers, artists, agents, estates and other rights holders.My services include talent fee negotiations, permissions tracking and keeping production teams informed about outstanding approvals or restrictions.I can also undertake music clearances, although I generally recommend involving a dedicated Music Supervisor, particularly for productions with substantial or complex music requirements. I can recommend trusted contacts and work closely with them to coordinate music permissions with the wider archive clearance process.
• COPYRIGHT, FAIR DEALING & LEGAL LIAISON •
I bring extensive practical experience of copyright and rights clearance across UK and international productions. I help teams understand the rights attached to archive material, investigate ownership and identify the permissions, restrictions and contractual terms relevant to its proposed use.My work includes reviewing existing licences and permissions, tracing rights holders, investigating copyright duration and potential public domain status, and identifying underlying rights in material such as music, photographs, artwork and written works. I flag uncertainties and coordinate further enquiries or specialist legal review where needed.I work closely with production teams and legal advisers on fair dealing, fair use and other copyright considerations, preparing source research, usage records and supporting documentation for assessment. I also review archive licensing agreements, highlight terms that may affect distribution or future use, and track clearance decisions through the edit and delivery.My role is to make copyright and clearance issues clear and manageable for the production, with specialist legal advice obtained where required.
• ARCHIVE BUDGETS & SCHEDULES •
I prepare and manage archive budgets, obtain estimates, track commitments and provide cost updates as the production develops.I also plan research, clearance and delivery schedules around the needs of the edit and post-production. Identifying potential delays early gives the team time to respond, whether the issue is an inaccessible collection, a complicated approval or a master that needs to be digitised.
• ARCHIVE MANAGEMENT & WORKFLOWS •
Well-organised archive saves time throughout a production. I create robust file naming conventions, searchable databases and detailed trackers so material is easy to locate, clearly identified and traceable from initial research through to final delivery.My systems link each item to its source, research notes, copyright information, permissions, costs, restrictions and intended use. Clear records distinguish viewing copies from final masters and track outstanding enquiries, approvals and orders, helping prevent misplaced files, duplicated work and missed clearances.I work closely with production, editorial and post-production teams to establish practical workflows that suit the project, keep everyone informed and support a thorough handover.
• ARCHIVE TRANSFERS, DIGITISATION & RESTORATION •
I have extensive experience overseeing the transfer of analogue archive material into digital formats, including film, videotape, audio recordings, photographs and documents.Drawing on a trusted network of specialist transfer and restoration facilities worldwide, I coordinate digitisation and restoration to suit the material’s condition, the production’s creative and technical requirements, and its budget and schedule.I work closely with archive holders, technicians and post-production teams to assess the available sources, arrange suitable transfers and achieve the best possible results while respecting the integrity of the original material.
• PICTURE LOCK, MASTERS & DELIVERY •
Before picture lock, I help check that selected material is available in the required quality, affordable and deliverable within the schedule.I review edit decision lists (EDLs), coordinate master orders, track licences and approvals, and liaise with suppliers and post-production teams. I also prepare final archive logs, cue sheets, source acknowledgements and clearance paperwork, and reconcile final usage with licensors.
• DEVELOPMENT & EDIT PRODUCING •
Alongside my archive specialism, I undertake development and edit producing duties, drawing on my wider experience as a Producer and Filmmaker.I help develop ideas, organise research into story threads and work with edit teams to build sequences, fill gaps and explore alternative approaches. As the story evolves, I keep the creative possibilities connected to the availability, cost and clearance status of the material.
• ARCHIVE CONSULTANCY •
I offer specialist advice to productions, archive libraries and collection owners. For filmmakers and production teams, this can include reviewing research strategies, assessing budgets, investigating rights questions or checking the status of material already in an edit.I also help libraries, institutions and private collectors understand and develop the potential of their holdings. This includes advising on cataloguing, file naming, searchable records, rights information, digitisation priorities and making collections easier for researchers and production teams to discover and access.Drawing on my experience as both a researcher and a licensing client, I can advise on presenting collections to potential users, responding to research enquiries and developing practical licensing processes.
• TEAM LEADERSHIP & MENTORING •
As a former Head of Archive at Princess Productions and co-founder of Dog and Duck Films, I have extensive experience building and managing archive teams.I allocate research, oversee clearances and budgets, and support colleagues in developing their skills. At Dog and Duck Films, we trained and mentored seven people with no previous archive experience, including LGBTQ+ people and people from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. All seven went on to work as professional archive producers or archive researchers.
